LATEST TRAVEL AND HOLIDAY NEWS ON UGANDA, RWANDA, CONGO AND BURUNDI - Information on current events in Africa's Great Lakes region, what you need to know on latest prices and offers

Uganda, is found in East Africa, boardered on the west by Congo, on the north by the Sudan, on the east by Kenya, and on the south by Tanzania and Rwanda. Although generally equatorial, the climate is not uniform as the altitude modifies the climate. Rwanda is a small country in the heart of Africa, with a total area of about 26,338 sq km, slightly smaller than Maryland State in the USA. It is about 10 times smaller than Uganda. Today, Rwanda is peaceful, prosperous and inviting. The country has three (3) national parks - Nyungwe Forest Park known for its large size and a vast army of chimps and monkeys; Akagera National park for game, including zebra, giraffe, antelope, buffalo; and Parc Nationale des Volcans where Dian Fossey  dedicated her life researching the celebrated gorillas. Congo is a land of wonder and amazement. At 2,267,600 sq. km Congo DRC is the second largest country on the African continent after Sudan. We mainly take travelers to do only two tourist activities in the relatively peaceful regions: track the mountain gorillas at Djomba (via Uganda or Rwanda); or visit the Nyiragongo live volcano (via Rwanda) and visit communities. Burundi occupies a high plateau divided by several deep valleys. It is equal in size to Maryland. The government and the rebel group Forces for National Liberation, which was the last rebel group to engage in negotiations, signed a cease-fire in May 2008, signalling finality in the 15-year civil war and the start of a new era of tourism.......

CONGO RESUMES GORILLA TRACKING

Gorilla tracking in Congo has resumed in full operation since March 2009. Contact us for details, or booking a gorilla tour to Congo. Pinnacle Africa Safaris took over 250 trackers in the months between May - August 2009!

POWER STATION BRIDGES GREATER COOPERATION BETWEN RWANDA, CONGO AND BURUNDI

Energy ministers from the Rwanda and Congorecently signed the protocol to establish the joint venture, equal exploitation and sharing of the gas. This came a few days after presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Joseph Kabila of Congo met in Goma, eastern Congo to resurrect the devastated relationship between their countries.

The two countries have, however, gone beyond the protocol and want to include their neighbour, Burundi, in the joint venture. The Rwandan and Congolese Energy ministers in August 2008 presented the offer to their Burundian counterpart in the meeting held in Gisenyi, 156 kilometres from Kigali. The ministers further discussed how to concretize the joint venture.

They also discussed and agreed on what to present to the development partners who gathered in Rwanda looking at the possible financing mechanisms to generate the anticipated electricity.

BOOKING INFORMATION FOR GROUPS VISITING UGANDA, RWANDA AND CONGO

Here below are the prices that have changed, this with effect from January 2009:

We can take our groups to travel in Uganda and Rwanda or Congo, including gorilla tracking. But as some of you have read Rwanda is a very expensive country. It is 2xx more expensive than Kenya, and 1.5x more expensive than Uganda.

Please find here below our booking terms for the year 2009.

1. All fees payable to us (rafting, gorilla, chimp permits, transport) can be paid for in euros or Pound Sterling. Other fees you will pay directly in the parks have to be paid for in dollars or in local money.

2. The amount of money to pay for the vehicle per person depends on the number of people in the car. The more the number of people in car, the cheaper it is per person. Our safari vehicles take between 4-8 people depending on which car you have booked. The Coaches normally take a maximum of 15+1 people with their luggage; that is, if the jump-seats are not used.

The vehicle and driver are usually used between morning and 6.00pm. Click for vehicle hire fees and prices to Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania

3. It is not necessary to make advance reservations for entrances and campsites in the national parks. However, our company normally reserves the boat/launch cruises for your groups in advance. This is done to avoid disappointments.

4. Chimpanzee Tracking. We would now recommend tracking in Budongo Forest (found in Murchison Falls) at $50/person. Each day Budongo takes up to 24 people to track chimps. And Chimp tracking in Budongo has the following schedule:

  1. 07.30AM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,
  2. 08.30AM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,
  3. 2.30PM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,
  4. 3.30PM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,

These permits will need to be booked and paid for in advance.

5. The Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Tourism Authority (ORTPN) now do not accept bookings without payment for chimpanzees. I would therefore suggest to you to make deposit payments, for each group well in advance. We will then purchase the chimp permits immediately. This will be urgent for each group. Failure to send the money in advance means that there is no guarantee of tracking the chimps for last-minute bookings.

6. It is recommended that booking for chimpanzee and gorilla tracking should be done at least 6 months in advance. Booking is done with payment at time of booking. Failure to book in advance means that our company cannot get chimp permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority Headquarters in Kampala, or the ORTPN main offices in Kigali, or the Congo Gorilla offices in Kisoro/Bunagana. Where it is not possible for any particular group to track gorillas or chimps, clients will get the full refund.

7. OLD Dollar bills before the year 2000 are NOT accepted in Uganda and Congo.

8. Gorilla tracking procedures in Uganda:

The cost of a gorilla permit to Uganda is US$600 + $50 for administration fees, ranger, community fees. Total USD650. On the tracking day, trackers assemble at a tracking base in Buhoma (bwindi), Ruhija (Bwindi), Kisoro hotel (usually Virunga hotel for Mgahinga or Ishongi or Nkuringo groups) by 7.00Am and are then transported to the park for the tracking.
