Budongo Forest Reserve - Chimps and Birds in Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest, found in Uganda, lies at approximately 1 45' N, 31 30. The Forest Reserve is 428 km2 in size, about 100km2 more than Bwindi Gorilla Forest. In Budongo, Chimpanzee tracking starts at Kaniyo Pabidi station, one of two sites set up for chimp viewing - the other being Busingiro. Average Altitude is 1100 m, with temperatures ranging between mean min - mean max: 14°C - 28°C (research 1990). With a high average rainfall for much of the year at 1500 mm (Dec-Feb. less rainy), Budongo supports Semi-deciduous moist tropical rain forest Vegetation, good for many species including 24 species of small mammals; nine primates; 465 species of trees and shrubs; 359 species of birds; 289 species of butterflies; and 130 species of moths.

Budongo Forest Activities, chimp tracking schedule and charges

Chimpanzee Tracking. We would recommend tracking in Budongo Forest (found in Murchison Falls) at $50/person. Each day Budongo takes up to 24 people to track chimps. And Chimp tracking in Budongo has the following schedule:

07.30AM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,

08.30AM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,

2.30PM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,

3.30PM: Maximum 6 persons allowed,

These permits will need to be booked and paid for in advance.

Make deposit payments, well in advance, for chimpanzee tracking in Budongo. We will then purchase the chimp permits immediately. This will be urgent for each group. Failure to send the money in advance means that there is no guarantee of tracking the chimps for last-minute bookings.

ChimpanzeeSafaris that include a visit to the chimps or gorillas are subject to availability of permits at time of booking. Please check with us for availability before you travel. Book your chimp or gorilla permit in advance to avoid disappointment. Gorilla and chimp permits, are in high demand, because of the stiff competition for them, and therefore are booked with payment on the basis of first come first served. To track gorillas or chimps each person must have the day’s permit which needs to be arranged and paid for in advance. Contact us for the latest status of availability, even for last-minute bookings.
